BROOKLYN Y WILLIAMSBURG. ¿Qué hay en Brooklyn y, especialmente, en Williamsburg que se han convertido en las zonas más cool de New York? Todos los modernos quieren ir a Williamsburg - panaderías, mercados ecológicos, diseñadores independientes, restaurantes con encanto, tiendas de discos y cerveza hecha en casa florecen en este barrio tan ocupado. Nuestro último día en New York no pudo ser mejor, con un final de día espectacular. ¿Y quieres saber qué le paso al Día 6?
BROOKLYN AND WILLIAMSBURG. What is going on in Brooklyn and, specially, in Williamsburg that have become the coolest areas in the city? All the hipsters want to go to Williamsburg - bakeries, farmer's markets, indie designers, quaint restaurants, record stores, and home-brewed beers bloom in this busy neighborhood. Our last day in New York couldn't be better and we had a spectacular ending to the trip. And whatever happened to Day 6?
El jueves amanecimos a -7 grados y con alerta de viento. De verdad, intentamos salir fuimos hasta Chinatown a coger el metro, bajamos hasta Wall Street y Battery Park pero hacia tanto frío que creía que me tendrían que amputar los dedos. Así que después del intento nos fuimos al Toys 'r' Us de Times Square a comprar regalos, a comer al Applebee's, a pasar la tarde al Moma y por la noche fuimos al cine a ver Gravity en 3D.
On Thursday we woke up with 19.4 degrees and wind alert. I swear we tried to go out. We went to Chinatown to get the subway, we went down to Wall Street and Battery Park but it was so cold that I thought I would lose my fingers. So after first try we went to Times Square Toys 'r' Us to buy gifts, to have lunch at Applebee's, spend the afternoon at the Moma and, at night, we went to the cinema to watch Gravity in 3D.
Nuestro último descubrimiento para desayunos deliciosos fue el Fiat Café en Nolita. Un café italiano de verdad donde me comí un bagel con salmón ahumado y queso crema mientras leía la entrevista de Vogue a Lena Dunham. Por suerte, cuando llegó el momento de cruzar el puente de Brooklyn, la temperatura había subido unos grados, aunque seguíamos en negativo. Me pareció que la otra orilla no quedad tan lejos quedaba tan lejos como me imaginaba. Brooklyn me sorprendió otra vez. Es un sitio precioso, muy tranquilo y con las típicas casa americanas. Bajamos hasta el parque de Adam Yauch para cerca coger el metro hasta Broadway. Antes de comer, había quedado con Nina y Bryson de Family Affairs en su estudio de Williamsburg.
Our last wonderful discovery for delicious breakfasts was the Fiat Café in Nolita. A true Italian café where I ate bagel with cream cheese and lox while I read Vogue's interview to Lena Dunham. Luckily, when we got to the Brooklyn Bridge, temperature was higher although it was still pretty damn cold. I thought the other side would be further away. Brooklyn surprised me again, It is a beautiful place, very calm and with typical American houses. We walked down to Adam Yauch Park to catch the subway nearby to go up to Broadway. Before lunch I was to meet Nina and Bryson from Family Affairs in their Williamsburg studio.
Nina Egli de Family Affairs tiene un pequeño estudio con mucha luz en un edificio alto. Hacía hasta calor dentro. Nina y Bryson me recibieron y me enseñaron todo. Bebí té verde con ellas y me probé vestidos. Bryson nació en Atlanta. Nina es de Suiza y se mudó a los Estados Unidos porque estudiaba interpretación. Son las dos las chicas más encantadoras y agradables del mundo. Me encantó mi mañana con ellas. Hacia las 2 del mediodía, había quedado con Kiko en Café Colette para ir a comer desde ahí. Habíamos decidido ir a The Meatball Shop. Comí albóndigas de ternera con espaguetis con salsa boloñesa y un huevo frito. ¿Suena sano? Absolutamente no, ¡pero estaba buenísimo! Después de la comida paseamos hasta Greenpoint donde había quedado en visitar In God We Trust.
Nina Egli from Family Affairs has a small sunny studio in a tall building. It was even hot iniside. Nina and Bryson received and showed me all around. I drank green tea with them and tried on dresses. Bryson was born in Atlanta. Nina is from Switzerland and came to the United States because she was studying acting. They are both the most charming and nicest girls. I liked my morning with them very much. At about 2pm, I was to meet Kiko at Café Colette to go to lunch after. We had decided on The Meatball Shop. I ate veal meatballs on spaghetti with tomate sauce and a fried egg. Does that sound healthy? Probably not but it was delicious! After lunch we strolled to Greenpoint where I was to visit In God We Trust.
In God We Trust tienen en Greenpoint una tienda bonita que esconde el taller y oficinas en la parte de atrás. Ali Breslin, la responsable de prensa y relaciones públicas, me recibió me enseñó el taller y la tienda y me presentó a todo el mundo incluidos dos chihuahuas adorables. Uno se llamaba Lola. Es casi del único nombre que me acuerdo. En In God We Trust venden ropa de inspiración vintage y joyas que hacen allí mismo. También venden gafas de sol y Kinfolk. Me compré un collar en forma de corazón. Después de la visita, fuimos a tomar un café por Greenpoint, un barrio con una gran comunidad polaca, antes de bajar al barrio de los judíos ortodoxos.
In God We Trust have in Greenpoint a pretty store that hides a workshop and offices in the back. Ali Breslin, the Press and PR Manager, welcomed me, she showed me around the workshop and store and introduced me to everyone including the two adorable chihuahua dogs. One of them was called Lola. It is almost the only name I remember. At In God We trust they sell vintage-inspired clothing and jewellery which is made in that same workshop. They also sell sunglasses and Kinfolk. I bought a heart-shaped necklace. After the visit, Kiko and I had coffee in Greenpoint, a Polish community, before going down to the Orthodox Jews area.
El barrio de los judíos ortodoxos es bastante impresionante. Puedes llegar a sentirte un poco fuera de lugar pero me hacía mucha ilusión verlos. Por la calle había, sobre todo, hombres con sus ropas negras, sus sombreros y sus patillas rizadas. Había otros que llevaban algo parecido a una bata y unas medias blancas. El barrio se veía viejo y desordenado. Las ventanas tenían todas barrotes. Las mujeres, una vez casadas, tienen que llevar el pelo cubierto pero muchas de ellas se rapan y llevan pelucas en público. El barrio termina justo en el puente de Williamsburg. Subimos dirección norte hasta Williamsburg otra vez, directos a Bakeri a por nuestra merienda. Para mí, pastel de manzana, nuez pacana, queso crema y canela. Cogimos los dulces y fuimos a sentarnos al East River Park a ver la puesta de sol - la mejor despedida que pudimos tener de New York. Por la noche, cenamos pizza por la calle, fuimos al concierto de Wayne Hancock en Hill Country BBQ y volvimos al hotel con una copa de más. Adiós, New York!
The Orthodox Jews neighborhood is quite impressive. You can feel out of place but I really wanted to see it. In the streets, we saw many men in black clothing, hats and curly sideburns. Others wore something similar to a robe and white tights. The neighborhood is old and untidy. All the windows are protected by iron bars. Women, once married, have to cover their hair but many of them shave their heads and wear wigs in public. The area ends at the Williamsburg Bridge. We went up north to Williamsburg again, directly to Bakeri to get our afternoon snack. For me, apple, pecan, cream cheese, and spice coffee cake. With our cake and cookie, we went to East River Park to enjoy the sunset - the best way to bid New York farewell. At night we ate pizza in the street, went to the Wayne Hancock concert at Hill Country BBQ and came back to the hotel with one too many drinks. See you soon, New York!
