DEERLIFE: New York - Day 2

UPPER EAST Y WEST SIDE. New York es un millón de ciudades dentro de una isla. A veces, vas caminando y, de una calle a la otra, te encuentras en mundos totalmente diferentes. Decidimos explorar Manhattan de norte a sur - empezando a la altura de Central Park. Nuestro segundo día lo pasamos caminando por anchas avenidas, envidiando edificios con portero, viendo gente con cara de dinero y disfrutando de tiendas y escaparates. The living is easy en los Upper East y West Side. Sin embargo, nuestro día terminó en un restaurante méxicano de Williamsburg. ¿Quieres saber por qué?

UPPER EAST AND WEST SIDE. New York is a million cities inside the same island. Sometimes, you wander and, just by crossing a street, you enter completely different worlds. We decided to explore Manhattan north to south - starting at Central Park. Our Day 2 was spent walking down wide avenues, envying guarded buildings, keeping up with the Joneses and enjoying flagship stores and shopwindows. The living is easy in the Upper and West Sides. However, we ended up in a Mexican restaurant in Williamsburg. Want to know why?

Todos nuestros días empezaron con un paseo por el Lower East Side en busca de un café bonito donde desayunar. Para nuestro primer desayuno, entramos, por casualidad, en el Flowers Café regentado por una afroamericana de lo más grande y salada, de las que te llaman "honey" y "sweetheart". Prometí comer bagels cada día que estuviese en New York y empecé a lo grande con un plain bagel con huevo, salmón y cebolla. También empezó nuestra adicción al café - por suerte, la leche de soja es algo normal en la ciudad.

All of our New York days started with a walk around the Lower East Side looking for a beautiful café to have breakfast. For our first one, we found, by chance, Flowers Café owned by a black girl who couldn't be nicer and called us "honey" and "sweetheart". I promised to eat bagels every day I spent in New York and I started big with a plain bagel with scrambled eggs, lox and onion. It was also the beginning of our coffee addiction - luckily, soy milk is something normal in the city.

 

A veces el metro que teníamos cerca del hotel, Delancey Street, no nos iba bien para llegar a donde queríamos ir y teníamos que caminar a otras paradas. El domingo, caminamos por el Soho hasta Spring Street.

Sometimes, the subway station we had near the hotel, Delancey Street, didn't take us wherever we wanted to go so we had to walk to other stops. On Sunday, we walked through Soho to Spring Street.

Paramos en el Upper East Side, justo delante del Metropolitan Museum y desde ahí cruzamos Central Park, aún lleno de nieve y con los estanques helados. Sin embargo, eso no impedía a los neoyorquinos salir a correr. Al otro lado, nos esperaba el Natural History Museum, donde trabajaba Ross. Bajamos parando en el Dakota Building, donde vivieron John y Yoko y caminamos hasta el Lincoln Center, donde se hacen muchos de los desfiles de la Fashion Week. Y hablando de moda, empezaron las visitas a tiendas: Tiffany & Co, Louis Vuitton...

We stopped at the Upper East Side, just in front of the Metropolitan Museum. From there, we walked through Central Park still white with snow and with frozen lakes. However, it did not stop New Yorkers from running. On the other side, the Natural History Museum, where Ross used to work,was waiting for us. We went down past the Dakota Building where John and Yoko used to live and we walked to the Lincoln Center where many fashion shows are held during Fashion Week. Talking about fashion, we started visting strores: Tiffany & Co, Louis Vuitton...

En la FAO Schwarz, disfrutamos como niños y nos volvimos locos comprando caramelos Pez para nuestra colección. Comimos en Wendy's: hamburguesas cuadradas dobles y triples con patatas y Coca-Cola. ¿Se puede pedir algo más americano? Paseamos hasta la tienda de Kate Spade y volvimos al hotel para cambiarnos. La diseñadora Samantha Pleet nos había invitado a una venta especial en la tienda Horizons en Williamsburg. No cada día se tiene la oportunidad de conocer diseñadores y menos en Nueva York. Lo pasamos de maravilla con ellos, me compré un vestido y probamos el Dark and Stormy: ron con cerveza de jengibre. Terminamos el día en La Esquina, no el de Kenmare Street - al lado de nuestro hotel, sino en el de Brooklyn, en un típico diner americano. Aún no habíamos aprendido la lección y pedimos demasiada comida: aros de cebolla, tacos de pollo y tacos de chorizo.

We enjoyed like kids at FAO Schwarz and we went crazy buying Pez dispensers for our collection. We ate at Wendy's: double and triple burgers with fries and Coke. Can it get any more American? We walked to the Kate Spade store and we got back to the hotel to get changed. Designer Samantha Pleet had invited us to a sample sale at the Horizons vintage store in Williamsburg. I do not have the chance to meet designers every day, let alone in New York! We had a great time with them, I bought a black dress and we drank our first ever Dark and Stormy: black rum and ginger beer. We ended up at La Esquina, not in Kenmare Street - near the hotel, but in Brooklyn in a typical American diner. Still had not learnt the lesson and we ordered way too much food: onion rings, chicken tacos and chorizo tacos.
