GREENWICH VILLAGE. Si te gusta la música, el arte y la pop culture, sabes que Greenwich Village fue el centro del mundo durante unos años. Anais Nin, Salvador Dalí, Isadora Duncan, los Beats, y más tarde, Bob Dylan, Jimi Henddrix y la Velvet Underground fueron solo algunos de sus ilustres habitantes. A día de hoy, la Village conserva un aire bohemio pero ostenta unos alquileres carísimos y es zona de tiendas de diseñadores. Es aquí donde supuestamente vivía Carrie Bradshaw y donde realmente vive Sarah Jessica Parker. Pasado y presente, todo me encanta de la Greenwich Village.
GREENWICH VILLAGE. If you like music, art and pop culture, you know that Greenwich Village was the center of the world for some years. Anais Nin, Salvador Dalí, Isadora Duncan, the Beat Generation and, later on, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and the Velvet Underground were only some of its famous dwellers. Today, the Village still keeps its bohemian touch but also has super expensive rents and is a designer store area. It is here where Carrie Bradshaw supposedly lived and where Sara Jessica Parker lives in real life. Past and present, I love everything about Greenwich Village.
A medida que ibamos recorriendo barrios de norte a sur, nuestros destinos quedaban más cerca del hotel y podíamos ir caminando. El martes pude, por fin, hacerme una foto con mi street art preferido de New York de Bradley Theodore. Nuestra intención era desayunar el mejor cheesecake de la ciudad en Eileen's Cheesecake pero no nos quedamos en el local porque no tenían leche de soja. Cogimos nuestros cheesecake de Bailey's y Cappucino respectivamente y seguimos andando hasta dar con Le Petit Café en Soho. (¡Certificamos que el cheesecake de Eileen es el mejor del mundo y tiene mil variedades!). En Le Petit Café pude tomarme mi latte con leche de soja, un bagel con cream cheese y hasta una galleta de avena. ¡Ese día me había despertado con hambre! Ya desayunados empezamos a subir por Greenwich Street hasta la Village. Entramos a la zona por Bank Street, la calle donde John y Yoko tuvieron su primera casa juntos, y también donde está la casa en la que murió Sid Vicious. En New York, cada metro cuadrado esconde un millón de historias. De ahí, a Bleecker Street, ¿te suena? Es ahí donde Marc Jacobs tiene tres tiendas, muy cerca de Magnolia Bakery.
As we were exploring the northern areas, our destinations got closer to our hotel and we needn't take the subway anymore. On Tuesday, at last, I could take a pictures with my favorite piece of street art by Bradley Theodore. We wanted to eat the best cheesecake in the city for breakfast at Eileen's Cheesecake but we didn't stay because they didn't have soy milk. We took our Bailey's and Cappucino cheesecakes and we kept walking until finding Le Petit Café in Soho. (We certify that Eileen's is the best cheesecake in the world and there are plenty of versions!). At Le Petit Café I could have my soy milk latte, a plain bage with cream cheese and even an oatmeal cookie. I woke up hungry! Once we had eaten we started up in Greenwich Street to the Village. We got into the area through Bank Street, where John and Yoko had their first house together and also the street where Sid Vicious died. In New York, every square meter hides a million stories. From there to Bleecker Street, sounds familiar? It is there where Marc Jacobs has three stores, near Magnolia Bakery.
Sex and the City es una de las pocas series que he visto enteras - junto con Friends, Lost y The Sopranos. Obviamente me hacía ilusión mil el ritual de comprar una cupcake en Magnolia Bakery y comermela en la puerta de la casa de Carrie. A mi, me parece una idea genial pero tengo que decir que los vecinos están hasta el mismísimo moño, comprensible.
Sex and the City is one of the few series I have seen from beginning to end - along with Friends, Lost and The Sopranos. Obviously, I was uberexcited about buying a cupacke at Magnolia Bakery and eating it at Carrie's house doorsteps. Feels like a great idea to me, to the neighbors - not so much. Understandable.
El desayuno de las 11 marcó un cambio de rumbo. Café en el Starbucks de Stonewall Place y empezamos la ruta musical habiendo terminado los destinos fashion de la mañana. Visitamos varias tiendas de discos. Mi favorite fue Record Runner, en la calle donde se fotografió la portada de The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. El dueño había tenido una tienda en Madrid y estuvimos charlando con él largo y tendido. Nos enseñó donde se tomó la foto de la portada del disco y donde vivió Bob Dylan con Suze Rotolo (¡todo esto dejando la tienda abierta y sola!). Luego fuimos a Café Wha?, Generation Records, Washington Square Park (el parque donde se reunen artistas y los estudiantes de la universidad de New York, Electric Lady Studios y una de las casas donde vivió Joey Ramone.
The 11am breakfast change our direction. Coffee at the Stonewall Place Starbucks and we started the musical route having finished the fashion spots of the morning. We visited some record stores. My favorite was Runner Recrods in the street where The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan cover was shot. The owner had had a store in Madrid and we spend a long time chatting. He showed us where the cover picture was shot and where Bob Dylan and Suze Rotolo used to leave - all this leaving his store open and unattended! After that we went to Café Wha?, Generation Records, Washington Square Park (where artists and college students like to hang out), Electric Lady Studios and one of the houses where Joey Ramone used to live.
Para comer, escogimos una de las 100 Mejores Hamburguesas de New York según la revista Time Out. El restaurante se llama Daddy-O, la hamburguesa está excelente y el camarero debe de ser el más cool de toda la ciudad. La mía con queso Monterey y champiñones. Para hacer la digestión, subimos al Fashion Institute of Technology a ver una exposición sobre la chaqueta biker y a hacerme desear estudiar ahí. Después de la exposición, bajamos hasta el hotel a dejar los vinilos que habíamos comprado y nos fuimos de compras por el Soho: Adidas, Levis, MAC, Nars... ¡La tarjeta sacaba humo! Cenamos en Mikaku - sopa miso, gyoza, ternera teriyaki y helado de judía roja, muy cerca del hotel para volver pronto, ver un poco de televisión americana y descansar.
For lunch, we decided on one of the 100 Best Burgers in New York according to Time Out. The restaurant is called Daddy-O, the burger is excellent and the owner must be the coolest in town. Mine with Monterey Cheese and mushrooms. To help digestion, we went up to the Fashion Institute of Technology to the leather jacket exhibition and to wish I studied there. After the exhibition, we went down to the hotel to unload the vynil shopping and go shopping again in Soho: Adidas, Levis, MAC, Nars... Credit card burning! We had dinner at Mikaku - miso soup, gyoza, teriyaki veal and red bean ice cream, close to the hotel so we could go back early, watch American TV and get some rest.
