MIDTOWN, CHELSEA & MEATPACKING DISTRICT. Tres de las zonas más emblemáticas de New York en un solo día. Un día que empezó con puntos míticos de la ciudad, siguió con rock'n'roll y moda y terminó con NBA y una vistas impresionantes del skyline de noche.
MIDTOWN, CHELSEA & MEATPACKING DISTRICT. Three of the most iconic areas of New York in one day. A day that started in the most famous places in the city, continued with rock'n'roll and fashion and finished with NBA and breathtaking views at night.
Lunes como este los repetirías cada día de tu vida. Desayunando en Nolita, en el Little Fox Café, un plain bagel con cream cheese y un café con leche de soja. Paseando hasta el metro por calles que lindan con Little Italy y Chinatown. Nuestro primer destino del día: la calle 49.
Mondays like this should be repeated every week. Having breakfast in Nolita, at the Little Fox Café, a plain bagel with cream cheese and soy milk latte. Walking to the subway down streets bordering Little Italy and Chinatown. Out first destination 49th Street.
Igual que yo sé donde está la casa de Carrie Bradshaw y el cementerio donde está enterrado Herman Melville, existen los sitios míticos del rock'n'roll como el cruce entre la 52 y Broadway del que hablan Rancid en Olympia o la 53 con la 3a que dan título a una canción de los Ramones. Al despejarse un poco el día, subimos al Top of the Rock para dejar la ciudad a nuestros pies, un poco de calma a la altura de las nubes antes de volver a adentrarnos en el mundanal ruido de Times Square. Nuestro desayuno de las 11h, un par de slices de pizza pepperoni antes de entrar a tiendas de guitarras. Para oasis de tranquilidad, Bryant Park. En el mes de marzo aún estaba un poco deslucido después de la nieve y las heladas pero en primavera y verano tiene que ser precioso. Cerca queda la New York Public Library, de camino a la estación de Grand Central, donde después 3 visitas, yo aún no había estado. De ahí, metro hasta la calle 23 para empezar a explorar Chelsea.
Just as I know where Carrie Bradshaw lived o where Herman Melville was buried, there are the iconic rock'n'roll hotspots like 52nd and Broadway from Rancid's song Olympia or 53rd and 3rd by the Ramones. As the sun started to shine, we went up to the Top of the Rock and see the city at our feet, a bit of calm before plunging into noisy Times Square again. Our 11am breakfast consisted of a couple pepperoni pizza slice before visiting guitar stores. Another oasis in the city is found in Bryant Park. In March, it wasn't really at its best after all the snow and cold but I am sure it is beautiful in spring and summer. New York Public Library is nearby, on our way to Grand Central where I had never been after 3 visits to the city. From there subway to 23rd Street and start exploring Chelsea.
En Chelsea, íbamos con un objetivo fijo, el sitio donde íbamos a comer: el Trailer Park Lounge. En la misma calle que el Hotel Chelsea, es un sitio en el que quizás no entrarías si no vas recomendado. Decoración kitsch años 50 con toque hawaiianos. Para lo que conocéis In Dreams en Madrid, ese restaurante debe ser su inspiración. Para comer, nachos con queso y guacamole y Philly Cheese Steak con bonitos fritos con canela - para salir rodando. Después de eso, necesité mi Skinny Vanilla Latte con leche de soja para poder afrontar la tarde de paseo por el Meatpacking District. El Meatpacking es uno de los barrios más cool de New York, donde muchos diseñadores han llevado sus tiendas y oficinas. Unos de los paseos más bonitos y relajantes de la ciudad lo podéis dar en la Highline, por donde antiguamente circulaba el metro y ahora pasean los neoyorquinos y los turistas.
In Chelsea, we had a fixed destination, our lunch place: Trailer Park Lounge. In the same street as the Hotel Chelsea, maybe it is not somewhere you would go in if you haven't heard about it. Kitsch deco with lots of tiki. We had nachos with cheese and guacamole and Philly Cheese Steak with sweet potatoes with cinnamon. After that, I needed my Skinny Vanilla Latte with soy milk to face the afternoon walk around the Meatpacking District. The Meatpacking is one of the coolest ares in New York, where lots of designers have taken their stores and headquarters. One of the most beautiful and relaxing walks in teh city must be the Highline where the train used to run and now enjoyed by New Yorkers and tourists alike.
Al día le quedaba aún mucha acción, viendo un partido de la NBA en Madison Square Garden - los New York Knicks contra los Philadelphia 76ers y disfrutamos como el que más de la victoria de nuestro equipo de vacaciones. Para cenar, cena ligera de proteínas para contrarestar la bomba de canela del mediodía. Terminamos la noche en el piso ochenta-y-pico del Empire State Building disfrutando del mareo del millón de luces que llenaban la oscuridad a cientos de metros bajo nuestro.
We still had much to do on that day: seeing an NBA match at Madison Square Garden - New York Knicks against Philadelphia 76ers and enjoying to the max with our vacation-team victory. Dinner was light and packed with protein to counteract the cinnamon bomb at lunch. We finished the night in the 80-something floor of the Empire State Building enjoying the dizzines of the million lights that filled the darkness hundreds of feet below.
